As Above so Below-Installation Views-2025

CURATED BY ANNA HLEBOWICZ

As Above so Below is a series inspired by out-of-body experience, approached through abstraction rather than figuration. The works emerge from moments when perception detaches from the physical body—states often associated with trauma, illness, or prolonged medical intervention—where sensation becomes fragmented and orientation unstable.

The series consists of paintings on silk, a material chosen for its translucency, fragility, and bodily associations. Pigment is absorbed rather than imposed, allowing forms to remain fluid and unresolved. Embroidery is woven directly into the painted surfaces, functioning as both structure and intervention—threads bind, interrupt, and trace the image, recalling sutures, neural pathways, or attempts to hold the body together from within.

Installed as a spatial environment, the works oscillate between weightlessness and containment. The title As Above so Below reflects this duality: the tension between mind and body, presence and absence, inner experience and physical form. Rather than illustrating the out-of-body state, the series invites viewers into its logic—one of suspension, repetition, and quiet dislocation.
